The Blu Ray disc format was created by a group of companies included in which are both American and Japanese companies. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video with the ability of storing large amounts of data far more than the DVD. As compared to the DVD, this new format can store up to 25 GB on one layer and 50GB on dual layer disc.
Blu Ray also has the is faster and this basically means that it will need less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to attain the same data transfer rate.
Besides the greater video and audio quality, the extra storage capacity also means there will be plenty of room for further content and special features. Content producers will be able to support new useful features such as downloading extras, updating content via the web, and live shows of special events.
Withthe much enhanced HD video and audio quality as well as the advanced interactivity and networking features, Blu Ray hopes to enhance the viewing quality of the DVD of users offering exceptional HD usage.
Blu Ray Review - Disadvantages of Blu Ray over DVDThe disadvantage is that as with any new product in the market, it tends to be more expensive due to the higher cost of production but this will come down as more consumers start to use this format.
Are Cnsumers Likely To Change? The reason that many consumers are expected to do so will be because of the HDTV. The disadvange of the present DVD format is that it does not support sufficient storage capacity to cater for HD.Blu Ray is offering up to 50GB of storage capacity and enables playback, recording and rewriting of HD in all of the HD resolutions.
Will the present DVD format be replaced eventually by the new Blu Ray format? The creators expect this as the Blu Ray format has got excellent support from the major movie studios. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu Ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month. In our Blu Ray review, we found some support also from consumers.
In my opinion, it is more likely, the two formats (Blu Ray and DVD) will co-exist for some time more until HDTVs become common place in homes. Before changing to this format, consumers should do their personal Blu Ray review to determine if it is indeed the right move for them to change.
