"So Far, It's the Best Vacuum We've Owned!"2009-07-19
By kayleighsmom529 (Virginia)
So, I went through and read a ton of reviews on Dyson vacuums. Some good, some bad. I finally decided to go to a store and look over the product myself since I needed to replace my current vacuum. I ended up at Sears where a great salesperson was patient with all my questions and helped me decide.
I went in thinking I wanted the DC25, but saw this one on special and asked a ton of questions. The one I purchased came with the low-reach tool and the multi-angle tool as bonuses. I like that the beater bar does not spin when the vacuum is in upright position (something I did not know until the salesperson was explaining the features). She also mentioned that very few are returned to the store, which is always a good sign.
With the chance of sounding redundant, I vacuumed my house this morning before leaving to go shopping. I couldn't wait to get home and vacuum with the Dyson to see if some of the reviews were correct about it finding more dirt and hair. Well, after vacuuming my house again this evening, I filled the canister with dirt and hair...kinda disgusting if you ask me that my old Eureka didn't pull it up.
There is only one filter that needs to be cleaned every six months. It has a very long hose that I can do my stairs with without having any problems, which is a huge bonus for me. And I really like that There are two places on the machine that you can remove if it gets clogged. I used to have to take the Eureka almost completely apart to remove a clog, but the Dyson has a place on the side and a place on the bottom in the back that removes for easy cleaning. The suction is better than any vacuum I have ever owned.
I have hardwood, area rugs, regular carpet, and berber carpet in my home and it did a great job removing cat and dog hair from all of them. I did not have any problems with it "eating" the carpet and did not find any fibers in the crude it picked up. Only time will tell how it will hold up, but the 5-year warranty is great to have, so hopefully I'll have it 5-years or more! Definitely recommend it, but you should wait until you find great deals. It's easier on the wallet that way!
"I love my Dyson"2009-07-07
By Alexis (PA)
I have had my Dyson for over a year now. I happened to find a floor Demo-Model at an electronics store for a fraction of what it costs to buy new. I was a bit nervous about buying an open boxed item that was actually used as a customer demo machine but my vacuum is still going strong which goes to show how solid this vacuum is.
I live in a rented upstairs apartment with 2 cats and was using a Dirt Devil that had finally broken down and couldn't be revived. After using the Dyson in just my living room I was shocked to see the canister was filled with dust, hair and other unknown particles. It was rather disgusting but the fact that I was removing all the debris made up for the grossness.
A few things to be wary of:
-The vacuum does not do well on shag carpet. I have a shag area rug that eats up crumbs and other things and the Dyson just cannot get to most of it. In fact, the shag carpet fibers are long enough that it stops the vacuum from spinning and it makes a loud protesting noise. I even tried to vacuum the rug on the Bare Floor mode but the suction just wasn't enough for the rug. We're looking into replacing the rug.
-I have two cats and two litter boxes so there is litter in the carpet. I have seen a lot of Demos on Home Shopping Channels that say it "doesn't throw debris". This isn't true. If anyone has ever vacuumed litter while in bare feet you know the feeling of the vacuum throwing it everywhere. This happens with the Dyson. It's not a big deal to me, but if someone was buying this because of that statement then watch out.
-Yes you find a lot of carpet fibers in the canister. I've even read reviews where they say don't vacuum expensive area rugs with this vacuum. I don't have any expensive area rugs, just junkie ones and I do see a lot of fibers coming up. There haven't been any holes or bald spots made from the vacuum but I make sure to do quick sweeps and not stay long on the rugs.
Finally, the hose. With regular vacuums you can detach the hose mid-vacuum and suck stuff up that way. With the Dyson you have to turn the vacuum off and "assemble" the hose to use it. Coming from a vacuum that all you had to do with unlatch the hose and you're good to go, this has been a slight inconvenience. I've gotten used to it but it still annoys me sometimes.
Other than those few minor details I would recommend this vacuum to all of my friends and family. I love this vacuum and I love that it makes my apartment feel ten times cleaner than it was with the Dirt Devil.
"Works great for long-haired people AND on dog hair!"2009-07-06
By C. Payson
I purchased the Dyson DC14 All-Floors after reading literally thousands of reviews on several Dysons as well as a dozen other vacuums that supposedly work well on pet hair. We have a long haired dog AND super-long haired humans within our house... so shedding is a multi-species occurrence in our house. I also sew, so picking up stray threads & the occasional straight pin is fairly normal. Because of all this, I consider myself to be a bit of a vacuum-killer. This is my fourth vacuum in as many years.
I have only had this vacuum for two weeks, so I can't attest to it's lifespan. What I CAN tell you however is that it works surprisingly well on my high-pile plush carpet and sucks up human AND dog hair like a dream. The attachments are easy to get to and work quite well at de-hairing furniture; where my other vacuums would just make little fuzzy hairballs, this one actually picks them up. The wand is long enough to get the spiderwebs out of the corners of my 10' ceilings as well, which was a nice surprise.
I am writing this review specifically for those of you with long hair. I am pleased to say that the beater-bar on this vacuum is flat, so you can pull hair from it WITHOUT mangling your fingers or using a screwdriver! Likewise, it can be cleaned completely WITHOUT taking the vacuum apart. AND in my husband's favorite part of ingenious engineering, the belt is completely covered by a housing-unit so your long hair can't wrap around and burn up your vacuum belts. This alone makes the vacuum worth the higher price, in my opinion.
There are a few things to consider, however. The cord is "only" 25' long. This is not quite long enough to reach the opposite corner of my living room without switching to another plug. If you have large rooms, please take this into consideration. Likewise, the front of the vacuum is quite high, and won't fit under low furniture. And the dust-cup is a bit on the small side, so you should plan on emptying the dust cup nearly every time you switch to a different outlet, though it is by far the easiest & least messy cup I've ever had to deal with! One other thing that may be an issue, is that it makes a rather high pitched whine. I seem to be the only one who is bothered by this whine however, (even the dog doesn't complain) so hopefully this wouldn't be a problem for too many others.
All in all, I am extremely pleased. It cleans my carpet extremely well, and seems to be able to cope with the constant shedding that occurs in my house. With as much use as mine will see I would be more than pleased if it could last three years... but with a 5-year warranty, I'm fairly confident that it will live up to my expectations.
"Never loses suction - because it doesn't have much from the start."2009-07-01
By D. Eckert (San Jose, CA)
My wife got one of these because of the hype but I'm the one who actually uses it. The thing has had terrible suction from the start. Yes, I have taken the thing apart and cleaned all the nooks and crannies.
Also, the head unit is so tall it won't get under the cabinet bases in the kitchen. There is no foot lever to drop the handle back. You have to step on the head and pull it back.
The hose wand gets stuck going back into the hose and the wand is unruly and tough to handle in tight quarters.
I stopped using it and went back to my $75 Eureka.
"Great for Cat Owners"2009-06-29
By Brain Doctor 26 (Raleigh, NC)
I finally gave in after owning two other vacuum cleaners and bought this one at wal mart. i was leaning towards the animal but after reading reviews decided that it wasn't really worth the extra cost. i am amazed by how much the dyson picked up! my carpets are spotless. i even used it on my hardwood floors and got really good results. dyson has a 5 year guarantee and wal mart offers a 2 year service plan. hopefully i won't need to use either one- either way, very happy that i spent the money since i can finally breathe in my apartment again! (it has some allergy certification that i couldn't find on most of the other vacuums i looked at btw)
