"Great looking netbook"2009-08-07
By jtaka1
Pros:
- Brushed aluminum looking finish.
- Matte screen. Not sure why they make something intended to be portable with a gloss screen anyway. It's not like you'll be watching hi-def material on a 10" screen.
- 10" way better than the 8".
- Keyboard is easy to type on.
- Battery life is decent.
- Very light and portable.
Cons: (but not deal breakers)
- a little hard to open. There is no latch or indention to grip.
- I guess the right shift key is a little wierd.
After doing hours of research, it came down to this one based on looks. It seems that all the netbooks in this price range have all the same specs. The only diff are battery life (which is sufficient for me) and weight (which this one is almost as light as you're going to get).
"Think Twice!"2009-08-05

While I commend Amazon for their customer service and reliability I cannot say the same for ASUS!
I ordered the 1002HA and received it the next business day. From the start there was no bluetooth connectivity and the mouse was faulty.
Both I and an IT professional tried all of the troubleshooting and recommended bios repairs to no avail. When speaking with "Customer Service" each of us, on repeated attempts got what seemed to be a novice reading from a script. Clearly they did not have a clue and did not read any notes to see the history of the customer calls. Most disturbing.
Once an RMA was finally given the netbook was packed and sent back per the instructions at an additional cost of $22.
With daily calls to check on the status of the RMA for more than two (2) weeks now there is no further evidence that they do anything more than read from a script, as the daily message is the same!
When asked to be transferred to a supervisor to get any kind of an updated status or return of merchandise date I was told all supervisors were in a meeting and unable to help. Apparently they have lots of meetings to have this be the response with each request. Maybe they are discussing how to get their CSA's off of the script! I might have been content if only for an expected date of return of merchandise. When I asked what the normal turn-around was they told me two (2) to three (3) business days. That was the first call on the fourth (4th) business day. It has been downhill ever since.
I am out well over $400, have never had a fully functioning eee netbook and have had nothing but a lot of headaches along the way to no avail. Still no netbook. Never had any satisfaction from customer service and still do not know what the status of the repair is. I would think long and hard before considering an ASUS product as their customer support system appears to be an oxymoron - nothing you can count on to back up their products!
Because of never having received a working product I would be unable to rate the product but for sure the company backing its product gets an F-!
"LIMITED CUSTOMER SUPPORT"2009-07-16
By N Ebanks (New York)
I purchased this netbook in February of 2009. It is a great little machine! All the good things that the other owners write about it is correct. I am not sorry I purchased it.
The problem is customer support! The little plastic cover over one of the hinge broke. I don't know how this happen but it is no big deal, it just snaps back on. ASUS support tells me to mail the netbook unit back so they can determine if the part is a factory defect covered by warranty.
I ask them to mail me the little clip and that I would snap it back on. they tell me to mail the unit in for two weeks of service. I told them that I would pay for the part and the shipping in advance, just mail the clip to me. They said the part is not available for sale. I will live without the plastic hinge cover, but I will tell everyone this story when they ask me why there is a part missing from my netbook!
I must give ASUS credit, their customer service Reps. were all U.S. based, I did not have to speak to India once!
Customer support has died!

"ASUS Eeee PC 1002HA Review"2009-06-22
By J. Bortz (Centrevillle, VA)
Just got the 1002HA netbook for Fathers' Day with a $50 rebate from ASUS. Got tired of lugging a full-sized notebook around to primarily check email from the road. This is light/small enough to just pop into a briefcase or purse as a take along.
Very nicely packaged with a very polished look. I do not see the potential for the "finger print problem" that so many other netbook reviews report. The 1002HA very light. It does take a little extra effort to open up, but has a solid, well-constructed feel. The velvet case that comes with it does attract debris, so may be looking to replace it.
Powered up great out of the box. Does not include a ridiculous list of software--what you need. Arguably may not need both Works & Open Office. Dumped the included Norton trial for the AVG freeware. Easy install, but MS Security Center does not recognize it. Also purchased the the 2GB OCZ memory module & installed it with no problems. The 1002HA boots up much faster than my Dell/3GHz AMD Processor/4GB memory does.
The LCD screen bright & easy to read. Not too many scrolling issues except up/down, but that also happens on my 22" WS monitor at home. I am not a touch typist, so the keyboard issue mentioned by others (small right shift key) is not a problem. Typing with primarily my index fingers is very easy to do with a good feel to the keyboard. I am not a big fan of trackpads and use a wireless USB mouse. That being said, the Elantech pad is more responsive/controlled than the one on my full-sized Dell notebook. Very easy to use & I did not have any problems with the rocker-style switch.
I cannot comment on battery life, as I intend to use it with the normal power supply. Speaking of which, the power supply is on a scale similar to the 1002HA--not a huge lumbering power unit. Using it plugged in, I keep the 1002HA on the super performance setting. For email & some light processing, my general impression is this netbook is every bit as fast as my notebook and/or desktop.
Bottom line - the 1002HA is a great little computer. Polished look & solid feel. Boots up quicker than my (more powerful) desktop and is very peppy running the apps I will be using it for. For the purpose netbooks are intended for, the 1002HA is a real winner.
