This 1945 D Jefferson Nickel is also called a silver nickel or "Wartime Silver Nickel." History of Wartime Silver Allow Nickel: The composition of the coin was 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% maganese a material that was introduced to stop using nickel. Nickel was in short supply and was a critical wartime material. The wartime nickels 1942-1945 have a very large mint mark above the dome of Monticello. The mint mark letter P (Philadelphia) was used for the first time to indicating changes in alloy with these coins wartime nickels.
