You Don't Have to Be a Lion Tamer
A Review of Honest Parenting. based on one single mother's experience.

Son screaming "I can't do this! This is impossible! This isn't FAIR! You're making me your slave. You aren't doing anything." Door slams hard enough to shake the walls.

Mom, sits quietly here face in her hands and starts to sob. This is about the sixth temper tantrum today. She has done everything she can think of. The temper tantrums were increasing in violence and frequency. She keeps thinking "He's not even a teen yet! What am I going to do?"

Does this scene seem familiar?

I'm the mom. My son was only ten years old. I was scared for him. I was scared for my safety. I was
afraid he was going to hit me. I felt like an utter failure as a parent. Some friends suggested I send him to a program for troubled children. Some family suggested starting him on medication. I knew the side
effects way too well. I didn't want to send him away. I didn't believe medication was they answer for him either.

I was doing research for my internet advertising business when I ran across this e book, Honest Parenting, by Daniel Craven.

I learned or should I say was reminded that:
My son was a person with wonderful qualities.
My son's problem was a behavior problem and could be changed.
All relationships are built on trust and respect. Both trust and respect have to earned. I would have to
be the one to re-establish it in our relationship.
(Uh-oh, I thought, will I be able to do this?)
About ways to effectively communicate with my son, even when I'm angry, so we both feel respect and trust.
Principles of discipline that were not destructive and allowed logical consequences.
4 steps to conflict resolution They weren't what I was expecting and worked a lot better than anything
I'd heard before. They actually work in other relationships as well.
Every parenting style has pros and cons. Choose the one that best suits your personality, then be consistent.
Its important to do things as a family and take time for yourself.

Daniel held my hand the whole way. He offers simple clear examples to illustrate points. He describes and illustrates skills so they are easy to grasp and implement. My biggest problem is being consistent
with my son. He even helps me with that one.

Honest Parenting has a whole chapter on ADD, ADHD, ODD IED and CD. What's a whole chapter when some books that's all they discuss? The difference is it focuses on what they all have in common and effective strategies for age appropriate behavior. Honest Parenting doesn't focus on all the bad behavior with those disorders. It doesn't focus on medical therapy.

One last question for you:
What price do you put on peace in your home and a smile in your child's eyes?
