Customer Reviews Great saw by .. Pete (PA) I needed another miter saw with a larger cutting capacity-slider. I was going in to buy the Makiata. Carefully studying several other sliders on display,I was more impressed with the Dewalt, especially the head play and more smoother action compared to the others. I do own and use a radial arm saw, an excellent machine if set up and used properly like any device. The slider is based on the radial arm in a portable package. The Dewalt was on sale, great price,so I purchased it with the lazer attachment. The lazer installed quickly, and adjustments were slow, one line beam,it should have been dual line, factory installed. It works so so, not sold on any saw lazers, just an indicaton to the cut line. I rarely use it. I'm use to lining up the blade,it gives me better accuracy. Out of the box the settings were very close, it needed finer tuning, fairly easy.I use the saw for homeowner work, and build furniture and cabinets as a hobby. The finish of the saw was excellent. It could use a larger table-its sufficient, but there goes the weight, a trade off. The blade is a poor cut for finishing work, it cuts quickly and clean for framing and pressure treated. Replaced, cut new stair treads and risers, the angles were a little different for each one, the saw was easily adjusted/locked to any angle and the fit was perfect. The saw is accurate, but again it must be tuned and used properly. It could use more power for thick oak. Very quiet compared to direct drives. I would buy this saw again and would recommened it. I give it a 4 due to the price, their all too high for the work they do, so so lazer-self installed/adjusted, and the blade it came with.
Needs Improvement by .. Robert Shiely (Chicago) Bought this to replace a 12+ year old Dewalt 705 (a simple, 12" compound miter saw.) I've only had it for about a month and haven't decided if I like it or not, but I'm leaning toward not. These are a few of the problems I've encountered -
1. Once mounted on a stand, any mounting bolt protruding from the front left hole on the base will prevent you from achieving more than a 57 degree cut. Forget 60 degrees.
2. Ditto to everyone complaining about the poor dust collection tube. Useless.
3. The hold down clamp provided is a very poor design. It can't be easily installed/removed without removing any auxiliary fence, since it must swing over the fence. There is no quick way to raise the threaded clamp, you must turn it fully through 3-4" of height. Tightening the clamp tends move the work piece. Even my 20+ year old Craftsman table saw's miter clamp has a quick release/slide. I very much miss the front mounted clamp on my DW705. Dropping the ball on important safety features in inexcusable - clamping a simple workpiece should be easy and reliable.
4. Mounted some Super-T-Track as an auxiliary fence (36" left, 24" right.) Mounts nicely, but attempting to mount a holddown clamp on the auxiliary track flexes the fence if any downward pressure is exerted. The Dewalt fence looks and feels solid, but it cannot take stress of this type.
5. Saw table is minimal. I suppose this is for weight control, but there is little work support and no usable clamping points.
I've not sufficient experience to compare this saw with others in it's class, but I'd recommend looking at alternatives.
On the upside, I get clean, straight cuts. It's quieter than my old 705. I wish there was a clear, up front indicator of when the sliding mechanism is locked and unlocked - I've had the unit slide on me unexpectedly a couple of times.
A great saw. by .. Tom Cooper () I been a woodworker for 47+ years. Reading some of the reviews of this saw, I must be either very lucky or Dewalt has made improvements. I used a DW 716 for two years and liked it so much that I bought the DW718 three years ago to replace a 20 yr old Delta CMS, even after reading the poor accuracy reviews. I have not had the accuracy or quality problems described by some. I haven't had any problem with it maintaining accuracy from one cut to the next and it is my most used shop tool. I should note that my saw leads a sheltered existence. I leave it attached to the DW 723 stand in my shop and rarely move it although I have taken it to several job sites to trim out houses.
I also admit that I check and adjust it if necessary at the start of each job as I was taught to do with all my tools by a master cabinet maker 45 years ago. I have to adjust it far less than either my table or radial arm saw.
The only thing I dislike about it the poor dust collection. I've found it almost impossible to connect the dust port to my central collection system. When I jury-rigged a connection, it didn't work well enough to justify the trouble.
One last thought. I got a really good deal (under $400) on my DW718 so I am not just defending a tool I paid too much for as a few of the less happy reviewers have suggested.
Good Product but it haves design issues by .. OSWorkshops (El Paso , TX USA) We purchased this product 7 months ago in order to crosscut wide boards. The machine is ok, it has a lot of power. The only complaint we have is that the fence -specially when you raise the crosscut capacity by adding 1 1/2 inches of melamine or wood in the miter saw base- the two adjustable fences when opened are not parallel one to another and there is no support in the middle of the board because the fences are opened. So we had to make ones and attach them with the 1 1/2 inch of melamine that we used. Another thing the dust collector is poor. We recommend buying a 12" chopmaster forrest blade (the blade that comes with the saw is not good).
Dewalt 718 Saw by .. Tommy Franklin () The saw is just as good as my DW708 saw. I like this saw because you can add the laser guide for cutting.
