Customer Reviews Great for small women or kids by .. Cynthia L. Bradshaw (Utah) I am 5'1" so some trimmers are too big and bulky for me to use. This trimmer is not too heavy or bulky, yet it has enough power to keep on going. I love the self feeding string so I don't have to bump it on the ground. My son can also use it without any difficulty.
Keep your fire extinguisher handy. by .. T. Jordan (Royal Oak, MI USA) Let me first say that I bought my trimmer at a somewhat nearby B&D outlet. I picked it up refurbished for around $25 in the box to replace another B&D that we'd had for sometime and was on its last legs last fall. It lasted the whole season, so I never had to unbox this new one until a week ago. It ran great for less than fifteen minutes and I smelled smoke. I looked down and the socket where the cord meets the unit was smoking and melting! I ripped the power cord out and stood there staring at the trimmer, smoking on the ground. I couldn't believe it! I've since used the cord for various things, so it wasn't the cord. 15 minutes and it literally melted. I've JUST discovered that out of 3 in SE MI, one is around a mile away from me. I can carry it there if I wanted! ;-) I'm so disappointed in B&B as the quality of their items has plummeted in recent years (including kitchen appliances). I haven't seen this issue in any of the reviews I've read here, so I figured I would put it out there. Scary stuff.
Designed to Fail by .. H. Beniker () I would steer anyone away from purchasing this product if not for the complete lack of electric trimmers on the market. I have two of these trimmers in my garage right now that family and friends have given me to try to fix after they both broke within a year of purchase. Both suffer from the same problem which is that the motor has disengaged from the trimmer head. I have not taken either apart, but it seems like the shaft or cable or whatever transmits power from the motor to the head has broken. Perhaps a link or something has come loose. At any rate, neither are working at this point. In my opinion, these are not worth the investment since this problem seems to be pretty common.
My advice... unless you absolutely have to have an electric trimmer, maybe for the weight or noise level, invest a few more bucks and get a gas trimmer. You'll be much better off!
better than gas by .. R. W. Milyard (Fort Mohave, Arizona United States) I live on two acres with lots of weeds plus have other property in AZ I use this little sucker on. I also have gas trimmers that I try to stay away from as they are twitchy at best, and a royal pain at worst. If I can get the electricity I will use an electric trimmer anytime over a gas one.
Auto string works if you wind the string properly (not beyond the little hole in the spool) (yup thats what its for) and as mentioned in another review, use another type of line, not the stock item and you will have much better luck.
spool advance gets fouled easily and uses too much line by .. Peggy A. Hanine (Tucson AZ) I purchased my grass hog 700 last summer. I had no problems until
I tried using it today. It advances line much to quickly I blew through 2 pre-wound spools. The line got jambed under the spool housing, I got the whole thing pulled apart and cleaned out some melted line in the works. I got it reassembled and try to go back to cutting old dead grass and the line fouls again. I'm done with B&D weed wackers- I've just ordered a Poulan.
