Start worrying about Internet safety if you observe one of the following 3 signs that might put your child at risk online:
1. Your child spends large amounts of time on Internet, especially chat rooms.
Chat rooms are the playground of singles. People go there to make new friends, search for relationships or sexual adventures. But it's also the #1 spot for sexual offenders and paedophiles to find their victims. They want to get in contact first, pretending they are looking for friendship. Once they won the trust of our children, they advance talking about sexual topics, supplying them with pornography and finally try to meet and/or seduce them.
2. Your child quickly changes the screen when you enter the room.
If your child has something to hide from you, it is because it knows that you would not allow him to deal with. That might be pornography as well as violence or gambling. It's also possible that your child is chatting or instant messaging with strangers and doesn't want you to know. Fact is, if there is something to hide, this should ring your alarm bells. The safety of your child could be in real danger.
3. You find pornography on your child's computer.
Finding pornography on your child's computer means that it is attracted by these pictures or movies and wants to find out more. It could also mean that your child is already in contact with a sexual predator, and that the pornography was supplied to it as a mean of opening sexual discussion and for seduction. In this case, you should act immediately. Search the discussion, restrict the internet access.
How can you find out what your child is doing on Internet?
A great way to find out, what your child is doing online and if it's safety is in danger is the installation of a so called Parental Internet Control Software. This software operates in stealth mode, means your child doesn't know that you are observing it. It allows you to filter out web sites with inappropriate content and you can monitor your child's behaviour on Internet.
