Customer Reviews

Could've been perfec... by .. Mitchell Parker ()
I ordered the GX630 laptop because I was starting college. I knew I would spend more time typing and doing projects online than I would in class, and needed a computer that could keep up. First off, I want to mention that the styling of this computer is second to none. In the pictures the color looks like brushed gun-metal. It is actually glossy black but still with the brushed look. It is rather lightweight compared to most notebooks this size. I did not find that it "overheated" although it does get rather warm, it's really not a con. The number pad on the side is convenient. It has all of the usual media control light/button and basic function light/button across the top. It is a lot of great hardware for the dollar. But of course this review goes two ways. There are some very minor flaws with this notebook. First off the keyboard is less springy than most flat laptop keyboards. It is also a bit squished together in order to fit the numerical pad. The only hard part with this is reaching the shift key with your right hand. The wireless card is somewhat weak. My other HP laptop(far less expensive than this one) finds three bars of internet in my basement. This laptop finds two, one, or sometimes none at all. The notebook finger prints itself super easy. That is to be expected from a glossy black surface though. The speakers are poorly built into the computer. If the volume is too high they will often vibrate against the speaker guards. It does come with HD audio software so if you have separate speakers then you are already set. The "turbo" and "eco" buttons are nothing that are special to this computer. All these allow you to do is more easily customize your battery options. You can do this on any vista laptop by clicking on the batter in the sidebar on the bottom right of the computer by the timer. There are only 2 USB ports(that I've found). Consider purchasing an expander. Between a printer and speakers I'm already filled to the brim. The biggest of all cons on this computer is the battery life. Expect one hour of battery if you're on a full charge and set the performance to turbo battery. This means the brightness drops, the processor drops, and it drops a gig of ram. This laptop loves to eat away at that battery. They do have 9 cell batteries available(the standard is 6) but they run 150+. Overall, I'm happy with my choice of computer. I've gotten used to the keyboard after a couple weeks. I am 3 stories away from the internet source afterall, so at least I can still get some wireless. The battery is replaceable if it is worth it to you. The battery performance controls are only a touch away versus several clicks on the battery icon. The speakers work very well at low volumes, but audio performance is amazing with separate speakers. I forgot to mention the the screen covering is FAR more durable than any laptop screen I've encountered. When you touch it there is almost no "ripple" effect. Last but not least, this computer has hardware that will kick your #%& and will not be outdated for several years(as far as laptops are concerned). If you've got 800 bucks to drop on a computer, then make the purchase. All computers have cons, but the ones on this computer are easily fixable and are very minor in comparison to shortcomings of other computers, and in comparison to the pros of this computer in itself.

Great gaming computer for half the price by .. Mr Bubbles (Alhambra, CA USA)
If you are someone looking to get a slick computer capable of running some of today's most sophisticated games on PC and not blow the bank, look no further. When doing research on laptops, I was looking at similar products costing $1,200 to $2,000. Frustrated, I noted several websites recommended this laptop. I purchased this computer just a few weeks ago and have had wonderful success playing games such as Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Empire Total War. The unit does, of course, get pretty warm while playing these games, but I still feel comfortable resting it on my lap while playing. On top of being great for games, the onboard wireless card is great. I stream movies and sporting events as if I was connected directly to a LAN line. Keep in mind I do have a pretty good wireless router.

There are only two issues I can really see with this laptop, and I can get passed them, but maybe they will turn you away. For one, the sound is not wonderful. After all, it is only a laptop. I doubt too many laptops will have good sound. This is easily fixed with a cheap pair of speakers. The second, the battery life is short, very short. I can work on its most economical settings for only about 1 and ½ hours. I can easily get by this because I am always near an outlet when using the laptop. For those who need to work for hours at a time at your local coffee shop, this may not be for you.

As a word of warning, the computer I received had the drive pre-partitioned, which gets annoying since they made the C: Drive pretty small and so many programs force themselves to be installed under C:. The great news is Windows Vista allows you to manage your drive partitions without having to by additional software (a huge advantage over XP). If you go into Computer Management, under Storage - Disk Management, you can manage your partitions (I strongly suggest looking up help files and tech boards online before blindly deleting and moving stuff around - you can erase everything on your computer).

Love It by .. Totiania Hall ()
This laptop is amazing, I love it so much it is worth ever penny I spent on it.

Great Deal... couple issues but i still love it! by .. Redd Hott (New York)
I fell in love with the specs, then i fell in love with the look. It arrived promptly and i fell in love with the feel and the performance! THEN... I tried to use the firewire port!
It was dead! Drivers installed and updated, device manager says it's working, but still nothing! Ok,so I got a faulty one?
Nope!!!
Amazon sent me a replacement (great service! i got it the next day!) BUT the replacement had the identical problem. I figure it must be MSI's fault.

It's a nice laptop and a great deal but I give it only 3 stars because that's a bad mistake by the manufacturer and the firewire port was very important for my work.

But i was already in love... so I ended up keeping the replacement laptop and getting and express card firewire port.
