The Paraguay sate has issued banknotes since 1847 during the presidency of Don Carlos Antonio Lopez. Originally, the peso was the currency unit, but in 1943 the Guarani was institutionalized and became the monetary unit. Currently the denominations are: 100, 500, 1,000 and 10,000 Guaranies. The designs of the coins and banknotes summarize the pure nationalist sentiments of Paraguayan people. Thus the 10,000-Guaranies banknote bears the image of Dr. Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia, a leader who consolidated the independence of the Republic of Paraguay. At the same time he established a historical awareness of the country's destiny as a sovereign state. The coat of arms with the motto ?Peace and Justice? is common to all the banknotes; the delicately engraved border surrounding them varies from one note to another. With the exception of the 500-Guaranies note, the characteristics of the design on the fronts of the banknotes are maintained on the reverse side. The designs show historic moments, scenes in the life of the nation and the more notable works of the modern country. These scenes are set between two worked denomination numbers. The design of the number on the right-hand side has a more pronounced relief than that of the figure on the left-hand side. Also enclosed are descriptive reference literature and a Certificate of Authenticity.
