The Lion King the musical was based on Disney's 32nd animated film of the same name, which was released in 1994. The Lion King was instantly successful and wildly popular upon its debut, and has been running on Broadway for over ten years! The story of The Lion King follows the young lion cub Simba, who has been named the heir to his father's throne, on his many adventures and meetings with colorful characters. Simba's father, Mufasa, is the king of the Pride Lands but has a jealous brother, Scar, who wishes he were king instead. Scar plots against Mufasa and Simba throughout the duration of The Lion King, and it is up to Simba to ensure that goodness will prevail in his kingdom. Throughout the story, Simba meets and befriends Timon and Puumba, a warthog and a meerkat. Eventually Simba meets up with Scar for a final showdown that will determine if Simba claims his rightful place as king.
The Lion King features music by Elton John and Tim Rice, including the well-known songs "Circle of Life," "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," "Hakuna Matata," and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Additionally, The Lion King includes lessons about "the circle of life" like growing up, responsibility, and leadership, which make it perfect for adults and children alike. Several new songs were prepared for the musical by South African composer Lebo M.
Despite presenting more challenges in its creation than probably any musical that came before it, The Lion King turned out to be of the most visually stunning and complicated musicals in history.
