I tried to tell him when he asked why is my computer so slow that he needed to take better care of it, that computers need maintenance just like cars do, but he never listened to me. He thought he knew everything and could just ignore it. Luckily I was able to pop out his hard drive and get all of his data for hi with my computer, but his was beyond fixable. He had let so much crap and junk accumulate on that thing that it just got bogged down and gave up, kind of like a computer heart attack so to speak. He ended up having to scrounge up the money he was saving for a summer trip to buy a new computer so he could finish out the semester. He was pretty mad about it, but as stubborn as he is, he asked me how to make sure that didn't happen again. First I told him to make sure he ran the defragmenter regularly, then I told him to use registry cleaning software to scan his computer for free to see if he had registry errors.
All Windows computers come with a defragmenter in the system tools (search defragmenter with your search tool), but unfortunately they don't come with registry cleaning tools. I sent him to this page that shows three of the top registry cleaning tools online to get a free scan. Turns out even after just a couple of months, because he was using his computer so much, it had accumulated some registry errors, junk files, and empty file extensions already. He got those fixed right away and set up a regular weekly scan with the software. Here we are a year later. We are both using the same computers and they are as fast as ever! It's nice what a little TLC can do to your computer.
