He learned of the problem of usurious practices during a debate on the subject in the House of Commons. He was so disturbed by the matter, that he immediately set to work on finding a solution. Thus, it was on December 6, 1900, that Desjardins' first caisse populaire - credit union - came into being. His model was an original combination of elements derived from four credut cooperative and saving systems in Germany, Italy and France. He further adapted it to the Canadian reality by taking into consideration the economic , social and cultural conditions prevailing in North America at the time..........

One dollar is made from 50% silver and commemorates the 100th Anniv. of the Canadian governments building of the Trans-Canadian Railway. The other dollar is the normal indian and voyager dollar made of nickel. A mintage of 199,000 sets. This is the first year of the full out proof set instead of the proof-like sets.
