I was a “world class” terrible student most of my life, and it hasn’t stopped me at all!
I grew up in a lazy little beach town in Southern California. Dad worked horrible, long hours as a janitor, and Mom rushed out every morning to clean houses while my brother and I were in school.
My parents were always exhausted. But no matter how hard they worked, we never had enough money. There was a lot of tension at home, and my only escape was riding my bike or playing baseball with my buddies.
School wasn’t so great either. I was constantly daydreaming about cycling, surfing, and girls instead of paying attention, and my grades showed it. Everyone thought I was a loser, and even I started to wonder…
Then something happened that turned my life around…
…a cycling coach invited me to join his team. I was just a kid with no special training and I didn’t know any racing techniques. With all the other guys strutting around like they owned the sport, I was definitely a little intimidated! But anytime I started to doubt myself, my coach would just tell me to focus on my goal and follow directions.
And it worked!
At the age of 17, I found myself at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. And that was just the beginning…
Me, the kid who was once a D-average student, ended up breaking the One-Mile World Speed Record, winning a National Championship, and 13 State Championships. It was beyond my wildest dreams. I won a roomful of trophies, traveled the world, and made a lot of great friends.
But guess what?
Trophies don’t pay the bills!
I was a cycling champion, but I was so broke, I literally had to sell my clothes at a flea market for spending money. I’m not kidding. I still remember the guy who handed me $2.00 for my favorite denim jacket.
I knew I had to find a way to earn a living. I knew I better do it before my cycling days were over, but I had no idea where to turn.
Eventually it became clear to me that REAL ESTATE was where I should focus my attention….
