Xbox 360 - 3 Red Lights - Repair Yourself
Have you had to pay for the RED Ring of Death repair. Have you seen the RED Ring of Death light come up around the power button on your Xbox 360? Has your console froze in the middle of a game? If you can answer YES to either of these questions, then I have a step by step repair for you to do yourself. What the RED Ring of Death light is telling you is that the graphic card is over heating from a design flaw in the system. I had this happen to me after owning my Xbox 360 for a few months. So the first time it happened I sent my console back to Microsoft for repair and even though it cost me $0 I was without my console for 8 weeks. The second time it happened I had a local computer repair company repair it for $100. The third time that the Red Ring of Death repair returned I sought out other options. I did a lot of research on the internet, I was finally able to repair my console for just $20 and 2 hours of my time. I still have enough material to repair it again should the Red Ring of Death reappear once again. Follow the steps below and you can repair your Xbox 360 yourself too. Go to your local Fry’s Electronic store or Radio Shack. Buy 8)12mm Cheese Head Screws 16)M5 Nylon Washers 32)M5 Steel Washers and a tube of Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound Heatsink Paste. cost=$8.00 for all material.
Open the console to complete the repair. You will need 3 tools to complete this repair. T10 Torx driver, Small Flat Head screwdriver or Xbox opening tool and a Phillips driver. Next follow the steps.
Remove the face plate from the front by grabbing either end and giving it a tug.
Next remove the side cooling panels. Push in on the holes on the bottom and top corner of the cooling panels and the panels will slide out. Stop buying modchips for your Xbox click here to learn how.
Now with the gray panels removed from the last step, we need to remove the bottom(with the feet) from the top housing with the opening tool or the small flat head screw driver. This can be done with the flat head but it is easier with the opening tool. Push in on the seven small holes and then you will unsnap the 2 housings. Watch out for the eject button on the disc drive when separating the housings. Remove the lower housing and flip the console upside down.
We are going to remove the cover from the metal housing that has all the electronics in it. Remove all of the screws with the Phillips driver. Remove the cover and you will see the CD Drive and the mother board. Unplug the CD Drive and remove it. Now you can see 2 pc cards with heatsinks. Remove the heatsinks from the mother board. They should be held on by push tap locks.

Now you need to clean the surfaces on the heatsink and the mother board with cleaner and light sand paper. Apply a generous amount of the Thermal paste to both the heatsink and the mother board. Now here is where you use the screws you bought to reattach the heatsinks to the mother board. Tighten the screws. This is the flaw the old snap locks allow the heatsink to loose contact. The new screws keep everything tight.
All you need to do now is reassemble the console in reverse order. Plug the console back in and try it.
This is all there is to repairing your Xbox 360 console when you see the RED RING OF DEATH. Or you can pay a computer repair company a big fat fee of $100. Now you are back to playing! Click Here for over 800 cheat codes for Xbox games.
