The village of Najac is one of the "plus beau villages de France".
Najac is perched on a ridge of rock high above a horseshoe bend in the Aveyron river.
The
village snakes along the spine up to the château. Most of this imposing
castle is 13th century and was fortified by Alphonse de Potiers, Comte
de Toulouse, during the Albigeoise crusade (Cathare). Later it was
requisitioned as a prison for the Templiers;it fell into English hands
during the hundred years war. Most of the houses in Najac are XVIth
century and some of the older dating from XIVth century. There are two
fountains, the oldest carved from a single piece of granite. This is
the fountain in front of the house. The countryside is cut with deep
wooded valleys., perfect for walking or visiting the historic sites
nearby; hilltop villages, Bastide towns, Archaeological sites and
caves, the Toulouse Lautrec Museum in Albi, or visiting the weekly
markets, fêtes and "brocante" sales that almost every village has over
the summer.
The house is owned by the artist/potter/furniture
maker Peter Lee and is situated in the medieval village of Najac next
to the ancient “Fontaine” on a quiet, mainly pedestrian road leading to
the castle.
The interior has been designed and finished by him: -
“My aim with the house was to achieve an uncluttered spacious
environment to relax in, using natural materials and the highest
standards”. All the furniture is unique and handmade using elm, oak,
wild cherry, ash and sycamore. Textiles include raw silk from Thailand
in sober simple designs and natural dyes.
