Search engines like Google and Yahoo have fairly complicated and frequently changing models for ranking Web sites but are ultimately geared towards relevancy. The more relevant, keyword-rich and up-to-date your Web site is, the more likely it is that search engines will regard you as a relevant Web site when desirable searches are conducted.

Now search engine optimisation (SEO) is a hugesubject and we can only scratch the surface here, but if you pay attention to the fundamentals in this Tutorial , you should achieve good results.

1. Keywords - Choose Them Right

Keywords are the most critical item in any Internet marketing project. Effective affiliate marketing activities are based on the need for a site selling or promoting a product to appear highly ranked in search engine results pages - ideally on the first or second.

Appearing on the first pages of the search results of any search engine means that you stand the best chance of getting people to click through to the linked pages. But how can we get our sites ranked on the first page of a search engine result? The answer is to choose the appropriate keywords that serve that purpose. But before you start stuffing your websites with keywords, you first need to know what kind of words or phrases to use. You will certainly need to do a bit of brainstorming to pick out a few keywords that people are likely to search on when looking for web sites like yours. Once you have done that, it gets a little easier because you can use some of the excellent free research tools available (like those provided by Google and WordTracker) to get more ideas.

The best keywords are obviously those with a higher number of searches but a lower number of competing pages. You can try for positioning when there is more competition, but it will obviously be much harder than for fewer competitors. You will get fewer visitors for the lesser searched keywords, but people who are looking for those keywords and phrases will most likely represent higher quality traffic. In other words they will be more likely to be serious about buying.

When you have gathered your keywords, you will need to select the best ones (two or three) for the title of your web page. For example, you could choose variations like "SEO tools reviewed", "SEO tool reviews" and "SEO products reviewed". But don't forget to keep the others for later use in the body of your page content.

2. Web Page Title - Include Your Main Keywords

Next, you need a page title of up to 66 characters that includes your main keywords. But DO NOT overload your title with keywords - it might look like you're trying too hard to get attention and page ranking.

Ideally the title should only include your main keywords, but as long as they are in the original, chosen order and it's not too long then that's OK. For example, "SEO tool reviews" or "Free SEO tool reviews" or "Top SEO tool reviews" are OK. But "Reviewed - The Best Twenty SEO tools for experts and novices" would not be so good.

You can also use the page title to reflect the structure of your website. In other words if you had a part of your site about search engine ranking, you could have a title such as "Search Engines - SEO tool reviews".

3. The "H1" Tag - Include Your Most Important Keyword

You can think at this header tag as a title for your page's content. In this example, a good "H1" tag would be "Top SEO tool reviews"

When Google reads a webpage, it views the text from the top left, down to the bottom right hand side of the page. You'll therefore need to ensure that the "H1" tag is at the top-left or top-middle of the page.

4. The "H2" Tag - Include Your Second Most Important Keyword

You can think of this tag as a sub-heading for your webpage, therefore it's an appropriate place for your second most important keyword. You'll need to place the "H2" tag somewhere towards the top half of your webpage.

5. Page Content - Use Your Other Main Keywords

When writing the content, you should try to sprinkle your main keywords evenly throughout the copy. You can do this by including at least one of the keywords every one-to-two paragraphs, depending on how large the page is. Remember to write in as natural a way as possible.

BUT: IF you simply repeat your main keyword like this: "SEO tool reviews and Top SEO tool reviews about Free SEO Tools", then it's highly likely that Google will interpret your website as search engine spam and you will not rank well.

6. Bold, Italic, Underline

After you've finished writing the content, you should emphasise some of the keywords. Only do this once per keyword.

7. Add "ALT" tags to Any Images

Positioning an image at the very top of your webpage and in other locations relevant to the adjacent text will make for a more attractive and readable layout. Each of these images should have an "ALT" tag containing one of your remaining keywords. You can use a keyword that you've already placed in your text, but don't take it to extremes - use a different (but relevant) keyword for each image.

Ultimately, any trick or technique to artificially influence search engine results is seen as negatively impacting on the relevance of search engine results. Search engines are continually changing their systems to prevent abuse by any optimisations perceived as abuse.

But, stick to optimisations like those in this Tutorial and you should be OK. Just don't forget that any SEO activity is likely to be an ongoing cost rather than a single expense.
