Below I will describe two courses that will grant a better understanding of wars in the Old Testament:

A first course that will help you to better understand wars in the Old Testament is The Hebrew Bible by Lawrence Schiffman. In this course, Schiffman introduces the text of the Hebrew Bible giving insight into what type of literature these books contain and whether or not they can be taken at face value. He covers major sections of the Old Testament that deal with wars, namely Joshua and Judges. The course will grant the ability to understand wars in the old testament within their context and increase you understanding of many other issues as well.

A second course that will help you to better understand wars in the Old Testament is A History of Ancient Israel by Eric Cline. In this course, Cline covers the History of Israel from the time of the Patriarchs down to the time of Roman rule. Thus, he also covers the time periods closely associated with wars in the Old Testament, namely Joshua and Judges. He also examines the wars with the Assyrians and Babylonians covered in the Historical and Prophetic material in the Old Testament. He examines whether Biblical stories are corroborated or embellished and more. Thus, one will learn much of what exactly happened in these wars in the Old Testament.
