Mayan Pottery Priest Figure
Pre Columbian, Classic Period, Ca. 500-800AD Mexico.
Lovely hollow molded figural Rattle of a Standing Priest. The dignitary is characterized by his regal countenance; he wears a tunic with decorative long broad collar featuring geometric patterned lines. The Priest is also wearing a heavy beaded necklace with hanging lariat style bead drops, large ear discs and decorative wide brim headdress.
Arms are held up at the shoulders. Nicely detailed face with defined eyes and open mouth with exposed teeth. Hollow formed & filled with numerous pellets creating the rattle feature with hole at center of chest to amplify sound. Rattle feature works sounding as it did 1500 years ago.
Rattles were seen as powerful instruments that are used for ritual purposes
Beautiful piece with excellent eye appeal.
