The Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw. IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV, was a medium tank developed in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s and used extensively during the Second World War. Its ordnance inventory designation was Sd.Kfz. 161. The Panzer IV was the brainchild of innovative armored warfare theorist Heinz Guderian. In concept it was intended to be a support tank for use against enemy anti-tank guns and fortifications. The Panzer IV Ausf F1 was the short barrel upgrade of the Panzer Ausf F, fitted with the KwK 40 L/43 anti-tank gun to counter Soviet T-34 and KV tanks. The German Panzer was the most widely manufactured and deployed German tank of the Second World War.
