I own an auto body shop. I've been in business for years, and I have a son who's been working for me while he's taking some classes at a community college. He's been taking some courses in business training, along with some body work classes. We've discussed his plans for the future; after working on several cars at school, he's become interested in custom body work, something I haven't done much of myself. We've agreed he needs more experience with the basics right now, but in the future we can discuss plans for a separate business start up of his own. There is even a possibility we can take over the lot next door for his shop. That way he can still work for me while he's getting his own business off the ground. The other option is for him just to do custom work as part of my existing shop, of course.
He still needs to finish school, so there's plenty of time to think about it. He's got a good head on his shoulders, and we get along real well, I'm happy to say. I'm pretty sure if he wants to strike out on his own eventually, he'll be a business success.
