I am an event coordinator who has just been put in charge of planning a convention for a national contractors' association. This is an annual meeting where the members can learn about the latest business views and industrial talk about the contracting business. My company helps coordinate conventions and meetings for many groups, some of them very large, like this one. We've done this convention for many years, and the contractors have recommended our services to other clients. Usually the association selects the convention site, arrange for the speakers, and handle media affairs, but we plan just about everything else, including lodgings, meals, meeting rooms, exhibits, entertainment, side trips, shuttle transportation.
Conventions can be massive undertakings; I find it very satisfying when they go smoothly. There are always problems of one sort or another, but we count it as a triumph when things go according to schedule. Then my staff and I can breathe a sigh of relief, but not for long, because there's always another event we're in charge of planning. We're always thinking ahead, and we always try to have several irons in the fire.
