For years now, Denver has been hurting for nurses. I remember when I was in college and rode public transit all the time; many of the busses had ads on them broadcasting the hospitals’ need for nurses. Medical centers were so desperate that they were offering to pay for your medical assistant courses, give you a sign-on bonus, etc. In fact, I think in many cases they still do those things.
If you are interested in taking advantage of Denver’s or another city’s lack of nurses, getting a nursing degree is pretty easy. Like I said, many medical centers and hospitals will pay for part or all of your education. I think oftentimes big hospitals have relationships with medical assistant programs, enabling them to send many nurses to school at once. If you don’t want to get an employer-sponsored degree, though, you might be interested in an online nursing degree, which allows you to continue to work full time and not worry about commuting to and from classes.
Nursing is an incredibly important profession, but it is typically under populated. I guess people just don’t think about nursing as a viable opportunity when they’re trying to decide what career they want to pursue. This just means better bonuses and other benefits for you, though, as it makes medical facilities desperate to find and retain nurses!
