A lot is changing in the higher education industry, all the time. Right now the latest college news is that a lot of state-funded schools are looking at crippling budget cuts -- my mom, who works as a librarian in a community college, says a lot of jobs will be cut soon, and she is just hoping that hers will not be one of them.

She also follows the career news, and one thing that she has mentioned is how much credibility career colleges have gained in recent years. When I was in high school, only the “dummies” went to vocational schools and career colleges -- anyone who did well in an academic setting went to a “real” four-year university or private college. Now, however, attending a career college is becoming a much more common and accepted alternative to traditional college.

Unfortunately, one thing that isn’t changing in higher education is the pay. My mom has been working in college libraries off and on since I was a kid, and she’s still not making much more than she was ten years ago. I think it’s sad, really, how undervalued instructors and college faculty are. Perhaps that will change someday soon too.
