Are Gays in the Military?
I'm sure you have heard of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy that the military has in place.
I was in the military for seven years, living in the military and saw first hand gay relationships going on in the barracks. It really did not take a rocket scientist to figure it out, though the Army did choose not to see it.
Below you will read an excerpt from the book "Touching a Dead Man: One Man's Explosive Story of Deliverance from Homosexuality"
Chapter 10: Homosexual? Not Me
Uncle Sam and the promise of a change intrigued me though I never intentionally wanted to join the military. But in October, 1982, I temporarily hid my homosexuality so I could get into the military. There was no "don't ask, don't tell policy when I enlisted.
Homosexuals, if exposed were quickly dismissed from the service with dishonorable discharges. My heart pounded against my chest in the recruiter's office as I sat reading the question repeatedly:
Have you ever had sexual relations with someone of the same sex?
I mulled over the possible ways I could phrase my answer to the question, but in the end I marked "no."
I never really meant to join the military. I only wanted to see what my chances would be if I just took the test. I knew that once they discovered I was gay, it was a dead end.
But, God somehow moves you towards destiny in the strangest ways.
I'm sure the sergeant saw my anxiety. But I passed all entrance exams and was set for a new season in my life, one that would bring with it sweeping changes in me.
