Where it all Started: A Vertical Engine in a Car?

In 1886, Karl Benz made his first automobile which looked like a modified carriage. In it he made his own engine. Most people do not realize that Karl designed his engine to run vertical. The flywheel was spinning like a top.

It had a huge flywheel about 2 feet in diameter and it ran this complex system of bevel gears and belts. He designed it so peculiarly because he thought engines running horizontally would have adverse gyroscopic effects on automobile handling.
We almost laugh at that today. Gyroscopic effects, what was he thinking? Well gyroscopic effects are real, but not the to the effect he thought…

Vertical engines on go karts?

I hear many out in the go kart forums, blogs and articles saying that to use a lawnmower engine you need to do lots of work…

You need a bevel gear box, or you need to flip the engine on its side.

Others will say just use a twisted belt, that’ll get the job done.

My thoughts are, okay… "Show me how to do that!"

I have yet to find a good bevel gear box… so that one is out the window. That’s not gonna happen. Not with my budget. If you are Jay Leno maybe, or Karl Benz perhaps.

Okay, lets see what was next… Oh yeah flip the engine on its side. I have heard that so many times. Flip it over, modify the engine…etc.. In fact I have done it. Sure it can be done, but the bottom line is that vertical engines run best…vertical!

(A vertical engine actually is designed internally to run vertical. The oil dispersion systems in particular are designed for vertical operation. The carburetor can be handled easily with a diaphragm carburetor, but you know, I don’t feel like spending that kind of money.)

Twisted Belt Drive?

Then there is the twisted belt method. Just what is that anyhow? Well you are supposed to just take a belt and twist it in line with the rear axel and then, voila' you have a drive system.

Uh… News FlashIt doesn’t quite work like that. In fact it doesn’t work at all like that!

Okay then how can I use a vertical engine?

What I want to do is use that riding lawnmower engine the way it is.

-No modifications.
-No carburetors.
-No goofy twisted belt drive layouts that don’t work
-No taking apart the engine to do some bazaar internal changes.
-None of that stuff!

-I want to use it the way it is...
