Lawn Mower Engine On A Go Kart?
Where it all Started: A Vertical Engine in a Car?
In 1886, Karl Benz made his first automobile which looked like a modified carriage. In it he made his own engine. Most people do not realize that Karl designed his engine to run vertical. The flywheel was spinning like a top.It had a huge flywheel about 2 feet in diameter and it ran this complex system of bevel gears and belts. He designed it so peculiarly because he thought engines running horizontally would have adverse gyroscopic effects on automobile handling.
We almost laugh at that today. Gyroscopic effects, what was he thinking? Well gyroscopic effects are real, but not the to the effect he thought…

Vertical engines on go karts?
I hear many out in the go kart forums, blogs and articles saying that to use a lawnmower engine you need to do lots of work…
You need a bevel gear box, or you need to flip the engine on its side.
Others will say just use a twisted belt, that’ll get the job done.My thoughts are, okay… "Show me how to do that!"
Bevel Gear Box?
I have yet to find a good bevel gear box… so that one is out the window. That’s not gonna happen. Not with my budget. If you are Jay Leno maybe, or Karl Benz perhaps.
Make the Vertical Engine Horizontal?
Okay, lets see what was next… Oh yeah flip the engine on its side. I have heard that so many times. Flip it over, modify the engine…etc.. In fact I have done it. Sure it can be done, but the bottom line is that vertical engines run best…vertical!(A vertical engine actually is designed internally to run vertical. The oil dispersion systems in particular are designed for vertical operation. The carburetor can be handled easily with a diaphragm carburetor, but you know, I don’t feel like spending that kind of money.)
Twisted Belt Drive?
Then there is the twisted belt method. Just what is that anyhow? Well you are supposed to just take a belt and twist it in line with the rear axel and then, voila' you have a drive system.
Uh… News Flash…It doesn’t quite work like that. In fact it doesn’t work at all like that! Belts burn, and belts come off, belts break, what a headache!
See What We Mean By Goofy Belt Drives!
Okay then how can I use a vertical engine? What I want to do is use that riding lawnmower engine the way it is.
-No modifications. -No carburetors. -No goofy twisted belt drive layouts that don’t work -No taking apart the engine to do some bazaar internal changes. -None of that stuff!
-I want to use it the way it is...-Run the snot out of it the way it is...-Smoke the tires on my go kart the way it is!Believe it or not, the there is a solution. What?…I didn’t stutter. There is a solution to vertical lawnmower engines on go karts…-No taking the engine apart-No goofy twisted belt drives-No carburetor changes-No modificationsHow is that possible? Very possible and very cheap. You can use the existing mountings from the lawnmower engine (no extra drilling!). You can use materials that are readily available. The result is a robust, easy to work on system that nobody is talking about.
Nobody has considered the system that the Go Kart Guru has put together as even an option. Everyone has basically written off the vertical engines and said "Can't be done, it costs too much."
The Go Kart Guru shows you how to transform your Vertical Engine off of your lawnmower, riding tractor, push mower, (whatever!) to drive your go-cart.And to top it all off, you can do it for less than $50. Without using what the Go Kart Guru's Drive Line Design:
You would end up spending at least $100 just to flip the engine on its side and hope (that’s right hope) that it runs well on its side.
You would have spent $100 on an iffy belt system and hope it works.
You would have spent at least 3 or 4 solid days futzing around with a belt drive combo-carberator system.
Why waste your time?
Why spend 100 bucks on an iffy solution?
No need for the sour taste in your mouth over a Vertical Engine.
The system that is shown in the Vertical Engine Go Kart Manual is simple and straightforward.
-No goofy layouts. -No internal modifications. -No constant tweaking. -No burning, breaking, and slipping of belts. Minimum maintenance if any is required. Standard off the shelf parts are used, and it is a rock solid design. What you will get is a pdf download for only $19.99. Everyone else on the net is saying "It can't be done!"
The Go Kart Guru is saying it can be done and easily!
The simple easy to read 18 page manual gives you everything you need to use your vertical engine the way it is.
Remember, no engine flipping, no internal modifications. I can't stress that enough. That engine is gold!
No need to throw away that riding lawnmower.
No need to turn the other way. When you see a gem nice vertical 12 hp+ engine sitting there, use it! No need to do internal modifications.
No need to pull your hair out, spending time and money on a lost cause.
