How many people saw the news report on ABC a few days ago about the old tires being sold as new by many tire shops. To me, it was shocking. An auto safety research firm called it a “ticking time bomb.”
Brian Ross, an ABC reporter, went to 3 big name dealers in Indianapolis and found tires 7 years old on the shelf selling as new tires. According to industry standards, tires older than 6 years old should be discarded, even if they have never been on the ground.
ABC had reports on several accidents directly traced to old tires where there were fatalities. The way to determine when the tires were made is to follow the DOT coding on the rim of the tire. Code 1402 means it was made 14th week of 2002. Code 459 means 45th week of 1999. See the pictures.
Until last year, this code was on the inside of the tire, and was not consumer friendly. I looked at my tires, put on 2 years ago, and they were made in 2001. My son bought a new truck late last year and the code had been removed. It sure looks suspicious to me.
I suggest you check the tires on every car you own. If you cannot find the code on the outside, get a flashlight, and check the inside of the tire. ABC found tires at major shops up to 14 years old being sold as new !! This cannot be safe. I also suggest you tell ALL YOUR FRIENDS about this - you could be saving a life.
