I have a few juvenile and breeding adult African soft-furred rats available for sale to good, loving homes.
If you've ever wanted to keep a small, low-maintenance exotic pet, these rats are for you!
African soft-furred rats (Praomys natalensis) are small exotic rodents and the possible evolutionary link between mice and rats, possessing characteristics of each. They are perhaps the most common rodent in Africa and can be found there in small to extremely large groups throughout most of the continent.
African soft-furred rats are roughly two to three times the size of an average fancy mouse, about the size of a juvenile rat (which is why they are sometimes referred to as dwarf rats). Their soft, silky fur has given them their nick name the “Soft-furred Rat”.
African soft-furred rats make EXCELLENT pets! They are by nature very tame and unafraid of humans. With proper and regular handling they become bonded with their owner and enjoy human interaction. These rats are social animals that absolutely need to be kept in pairs or colonies in order to be happiest and healthiest (and there's nothing more adorable than a heap of them nuzzled on top of each other sound asleep!). Being desert animals, African soft-furred rats produce almost no odor (which can't be said for common rats and mice). Thus their cage stays incredibly clean, and bedding changes only need be done every 2-3 weeks. They also live longer than common mice and rats, having life spans between 3-5 years.
Their common African name- natal multimammate mouse- literally means many-breasted mouse, so-named because the females possess extra teats (8-14 pairs rather than the usual 5 or 6 pairs that other rodents have). African soft-furred rats are fairly crepuscular and generally active at random intervals throughout the day and night. They are omnivores, eating mostly seeds but also requiring fruits, vegetables and animal protein to maintain a healthy diet.
African soft-furred rats are easy to keep, unique and make truly rewarding pets. I'm rehoming them to the right caretaker for $10 dollars per same-sex pair. Because of their social requirement I will not sell single rats. Each additional rat after that is $3. If you are interested in having these wonderful little exotics as pets, please email me and come see for yourself just how neat they are.
