Product Review
Sonys DCRIP5 is the world's smallest handycam that features a revolutionary ultra-compact recording media. DCR-IP5 makes use of an innovative new storage medium to achieve its minute proportions. The MICROMV cassette is barely as large as a postage stamp, with a size that's 70% smaller than a MiniDV cassette.
In the search for a new format, Sony selected MPEG-2 compression due to the already widely accepted popularity of DVD players and software. MPEG-2 provides faithful compression of high-quality image data, encouraging the miniaturization of the recording media.
The DCR-IP5 uses Super SteadyShot image stabilization to avoid the shakes normally associated with high zoom levels. Image stabilization will likely be your best friend when using the IP5, as its small size and weight lend themselves to the small camera movements likely to result in shaky footage. The camera comes with S-video, composite video, and IEEE 1394 ports.
It measures less than 2 inches wide, 3 inches high, and just over 3 inches deep. In other words, it's the smallest digital camcorder! Amazingly, Sony crammed a 10x optical zoom and 2.5-inch LCD onto this thing, which means they didn't sacrifice anything in their quest for smallness. It also features Carl Zeiss lenses that promise better contrast, color saturation and image brilliance.
