Product Review
Divided into three parts, the book's simple structure makes it easy to follow. The opening identifies what Gore contends are the five enemies of reason: fear, superstition, ideology, deception and intolerance. Middle chapters examine the damage those things have caused, and the last 30 pages offer a few solutions.
Al Gore is obviously a man with an agenda and a seriously deep love for the foundation on which the United States was built in his eyes: reason, fairness, the rule of law and governments of law, not cults of personality as well as a close bi-directional connection and conversation between the elected and those who elect them. He writes with a passion and a determination. Whether you like the message or not, its hard to deny he is a man who means what he says here and says what he means. There are no punches pulled. And he is a man who obviously loves his country.
It is extremely critical of the Bush-Cheney administration as well as the Republican controlled congress of the previous six years for allowing Bush-Cheney to run roughshod over the constitution and well as the ill-fated war in Iraq. The quality of research in it suggests it is well written, well reasoned and calm. You could see it as a furtherance of the global warming/climate change crisis, as you'd be right. But a man of conviction as Al seems to have become in his years in the political wilderness, presenting his arguments in a timely and lucid manner, as he has done so, is worthy of an unbiased read because much of what he has to say needs to be heard.
