As usual, John Sandford has penned a book that is impossible to put down. With "Dead Watch", Sanford has delivered a political thriller that is fully worthy of mention alongside his popular police-procedural Prey series. Dead Watch is a very good book; well written, interesting plot, good characters. It is different from the Prey books, but still has the Sandford quality.
Jake Winters, the lead character, is the classic amateur detective-wounded Iraq War vet and university professor, he excels in "forensic bureaucracy" or finding out what really happened and why. The death of a former Senator leads him into the netherworld of play for keeps politics and into the arms of the late politician's widow.
If you like the tough and vulnerable characters that Mr. Sandford created with Kidd and Davenport you will love Jake Winter. Jake is the kind of guy that all of us would like to be and that we all love to read about. This book is a political detective novel full of murder, corruption, and suspense. If you have ever read any books by Sandford and liked them take my advice and grab this one.
