I know there are a lot of young men and women out there wondering how
can a person get started as a professional truck driver? Let me say
this, it certainly is not going to be as easy as it was in1973 when I
decided to be a driver. I was working as a mechanic at a Chevy
dealership in Missoula MT. and I loved the outdoors. I decided that
being a log truck driver would get me into the woods and make some good
money also. I had a friend who was a driver, he introduced me to his
boss who decided to give me a try. I rode with my friend two days and
drove the truck empty a couple of trips, then loaded a couple and on
the second trip loaded he said drop me off in town and go get another
load! I about fell out of the truck! well I got the load and took it to
the mill with no mishaps and the next day the boss gave me my own truck
to drive.
I had to learn trucking the hard way...by trial and error. In fact,
this took years. And now, over 3 million miles later, having driven dry
van, flat bed, tanker, reefer, low boy, log truck, dump truck and roll
back, I can humbly say I know a lot about the world of trucking, how to
become a successful driver, and how to get the most out of the trucking
life. Well nowadays it is a little bit more difficult to get started
but much more rewarding
With the advent of the commercial drivers license you will need to
study. You will need to pass a stringent test including oral, written
and driving sections. there are different weight classes associated
with the C.D.L. with the top one being the class A that you need to
drive semi's. Then there are the various endorsements, such as tanker,
doubles and triples, haz-mat and air brakes. You see it gets quite
involved. The insurance companies are not set in their age limits yet
as they change them occasionally. This will be determined by the
Carrier you drive for. (most say 23 yrs.). You would also need to
decide where to start training. Some companies offer a training plan
and pay you while you learn, others will reimburse you all or part of
the cost of an accredited truck driving school if you remain with them
a certain length of time.
You can change the type of truck you want to drive throughout your
career but you need to choose one type to begin. there are many
options such as dry van, tanker, flat bed, refrigerated, Heavy haul,
Low boy and step-deck, to name a few. You need to decide if you want
long haul, regional, local or whatever by how long you want to be away
from home. There are so many aspects to being a professional driver
that you need to find a way to gather all the necessary information to
make the right choice. Well in order to do just that I have scoured the
Internet for the best help you can find. If you are ready to take the
