Deciding between the top two folding treadmills from Sole is surprisingly, not too difficult of a task. If you don't feel like reading the rest of the review, the simple answer is to get the Sole F85 if you're going to be doing a lot of running. If you're not going to be running a lot but you're still going to use it on a regular basis, the Sole F83 is a better choice for financial reasons. In fact, if you're considering the Sole F83, the Sole F80 might actually be a better choice for most people but that's for another review. If you want to know the reasoning behind my choices, read on.
The Sole F83 (as well as the Sole F80) are well built machines designed to take quite a beating. That is why for most users that aren't hardcore running enthusiasts, either of these treadmills are going to be great buys because you're not likely to experience many if any problems. But for those buyers that are running enthusiasts, it's a much safer bet to buy the Sole F85.
To see why the Sole F85 is the safer bet, we refer to Treadmill Doctor, the most well known expert online on treadmill reviews. The treadmill doctor gave better marks to the Sole F85 in four out of eight areas than the Sole F83. That's substantial! Now, if you look at the marks for the Sole F83 against the Sole F80, they're practically identical. That is why the Sole F83 is really one of the worst deals from Sole with both the Sole F80 and Sole F85 as much better deals.
If you just look at the specs of the Sole F83 and F85, you probably don't see much of a difference. The main differences are the treadbelt sizes and the motor ratings. Hardly worth the $200 you might think. But I rest my case with the treadmill doctor ratings.
Bottom line - Get the Sole F85 or the Sole F80 if you can't. Unless you're so tall that the 55" belt of the F80 isn't enough and you can't afford the F85, only then is the Sole F83 the right choice. But in that case, you might want to look at the non folding treadmill offerings from Sole as well provided you don't need the folding functionality.
