Side-By-Side Review

In this year and years past, the Sole F80 is and has been a best buy treadmill choice according to many experts. But best buy doesn't often mean the best quality, it's usually a recognition of great quality that's matched with great prices. So if you pit the best buy Sole F80 against the expensive Sole F85, common sense tells us that the Sole F85 is the better treadmill if money isn't factored into the buying decision. But if money is a factor, is the $500 price gap justified? Which one is the better deal? This review will deal with these two questions.

The Sole F85 has a monster motor at 3.5 HP. The Sole F80 also has a powerful motor albeit not as powerful as the F85 coming in at "only" 3.0 HP. There are at least a few good reasons why the Sole F85 has a more powerful motor than the F80. First of all, the Sole F85 has a bigger belt than the F80 so it needs to be fitted with a bigger motor to match it. Second of all, the max speed is 12 mph on the F85 while only 11 mph on the F80. A more powerful motor at higher max speeds just makes sense. Thirdly, it is generally accepted that when you pay more, you get more. In this case, it's more horsepower.

There's a noticeable 30 pound difference between these two treadmills. Although the Sole F80 is already quite stable (especially compared to the F63), the extra 30 lbs on the Sole F83 is like icing on the cake. When you're buying a treadmill, you should take every extra pound of stability you can get. It's thus not surprising that you see the F85 rated with a maximum user weight of 400 lbs compared to 350 lbs on the Sole F80. Even the treadmill doctor gave the Sole F85 a better score in the quality and cushioning categories suggesting that you're really getting an upgrade if you buy the Sole F85 instead of the Sole F80. The same can't be said if you buy the Sole F83 over the Sole F80.

One final difference between these two treadmills is the console. The display is only in one color on the Sole F80 but in real three colors for the Sole F85. This shouldn't be a make it or break it factor in your buying decision but you should be aware of this nonetheless.

Winner – Sole F80 is the better deal. Sole F85 is the better machine.
