Deciding between the Smooth CE elliptical and the Smooth CE 2.1 is difficult for a number of reasons. Neither of these two ellipticals offer something that truly sets itself apart from the other. They both have a LCD console, they both have about the same number of programs (though their program types are completely different than the other), their stride length is the same and there isn’t much of a weight difference either suggesting that one is not more stable than the other.
However, if you look closely, the Smooth CE2.1 has a warranty that is shorter than the Smooth CE. The Smooth CE comes with a lifetime frame, brake, 3 years parts and 1 year labor while the Smooth CE 2.1 comes with a 2 years part and 1 year labor warranty. You might think that a one year difference in the part warranty doesn’t amount to much and you may be right. But take note of the fact that out of all the ellipticals the company sells, only the Smooth CE2.1 sells with a warranty less than 2 years for parts. This suggests that they know the Smooth CE 2.1 elliptical will probably not last as long as the ellipticals.
So to decide which elliptical trainer to get, you have to ask yourself how important quality is to you. You also have to ask if you’re willing to pay a bit more for a bit more quality. If I were you, I would pick either the Smooth CE or the Smooth CE 3.2 over the Smooth CE 2.1. Depending on when you buy it, the Smooth CE 3.2 could be the same price or more expensive than the CE 2.1. But in either case it’s a better buy because of its increased reliability. The Smooth CE will always be more expensive than the CE 2.1 and I would buy it over the CE2.1 for reliability reasons as well.
