You may be wondering why I’m comparing two treadmills that are miles apart in terms of price. After all, the Smooth 9.45TV often sells at prices around $4000 while the Smooth 9.35 HR sells for much less and occasionally below $2000. The $4000 Smooth 9.45TV treadmill is the obvious better choice, right? Well no. It turns out that determining the better treadmill in terms of features is easy (it’s the 9.45TV by the way) but knowing which one is the better deal can be quite deceiving.
For this comparison review, we’ll use the most extreme example of the $2000 and $4000 prices for the Smooth 9.35HR and Smooth 9.45TV treadmill respectively.
If you look at the specs of each of these newly 2008 released treadmills, you’ll discover that there aren’t a whole lot of differences. Motor is the same, console is the same, incline is the same, speed is the same, heart rate functions are the same. The only differences you’ll find are the unit weight and the belt length. It’s true that the Smooth 9.45TV is five inches longer than the Smooth 9.35HR but you shouldn’t need to pay an arm and a leg more to get those five inches. The 9.45TV treadmill is heavier but with the treadmills closing in on 300 pounds, the extra weight doesn’t contribute too much to stability. Finally, you get lifetime warranty on parts (except for TV) on the Smooth 9.45 TV but only five years parts on the Smooth 9.35HR. You might think that a longer warranty is confidence from the manufacturer in its product. In a way, this is true but I think they can afford to provide a lifetime warranty because of the premium you’re (over)paying them.
Here’s what I think you should do. If you’re considering the Smooth 9.45TV treadmill at all for your home, you’re likely thinking along the lines of worrying about getting bored running or jogging. Instead of buying the TV treadmill, buy the “TV less” Smooth 9.35 and get yourself a 50” plasma TV such as this one for more or less the same total price.
Winner: Smooth 9.35HR (and separate plasma TV)
