Depression glass was distributed free, or at low cost in the United States during the late 1920s through World War II. Generally clear, or colored translucent, the glass was often given away as an incentive by food manufacturers and distributors. Other businesses, such as movie theatres and stores would hand them out as door prizes.
Manufactured mainly by 20 or so manufacturers in the midwestern United States, there were more than 100 patterns. Some patterns were used to manufacture entire dinner sets. People would return to stores on a regular basis to complete their sets.
Popular as a collectible since the 1960s, Depression glass is becoming more scarce on the open market. Rare pieces can go as high as several hundreds of dollars.
