Genuine antique Indian sculpture! Incredibly detailed, one-of-a-kind
In
India, since the ancient times, woman has been the object of
special devotion. Indus valley figurines, fertility deities, and the
goddess figures standing guard at the entrancesof holy palaces
are all illustrative of the fact that the female image- right up to the
medieval period - was an eternal theme for Buddhist or Brahmanic
sculptors.
THIS
STUNNING WORK OF ART IS A MUSEUM QUALITY SPECIMEN THAT IS TRUE
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE COVERED IN A WONDERFUL PATINA OVER THE
CENTURIES THAT EXUDES A SPIRITUAL PRESENCE THAT IS TRULY MESMERIZING.
The
traditional representation of female sensuality - as seen here - was
maintained down the centuries. Here we see the voluptuous figure of the
"female spirit." The figure is endowed with an ample bosom, and both the position of
her head - slightly tilted to the right - and the twist of her her bust
are perhaps indicative of the original "tribangha" or "triple -flexion
posture", characteristic of Indian sculpture. The earrings, her long
pearl necklace and finally her gaze as she looks into a mirror are
tokens of the abiding passion of Indian women for jewelry and finery
that go hand in hand with their own renowned beauty. A unique aspect of this work is the tiny figure
of a monkey that kneels beneath, gazing up at her to probably emphasize
her beauty, power and status.
