Hoping to replicate its success in the elliptical trainer market, Nautilus Inc released the Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer in 2008. Priced at just below $800, it is Schwinn’s second most expensive elliptical.
Compared to the Schwinn 431, the Schwinn 438 elliptical trainer is a slightly older model as it was first released in 2005. It however, is the most expensive elliptical selling at just short of $1000 and is the most high end unit under the Schwinn brand.
How does the newly released model compare to the most expensive model? Let’s take a look.
The easiest way to determine the quality of basically any piece of fitness equipment is the length of the warranty. Although it isn’t fail-proof, for comparative purposes, it is quite useful. In this case, we see that the Schwinn 431 is inferior in all warranty areas compared to the Schwinn 438.
The frame is warranted for 30 years on the Schwinn 438 compared to the 15 on the Schwinn 431. The parts warranty is also longer at 3 years instead of 2. Finally, the labor is set at a full 365 days compared to the 6 months on the Schwinn 431. It would seem that Nautilus (company behind the Schwinn brand) is much more confident in the Schwinn 438 than the Schwinn 418 and it should be since it’s almost $200 more expensive.
The Schwinn 438 also comes with grip and a telemetric (i.e wireless) heart rate monitor. The Schwinn 431 only comes with a grip. That’s about $50 right there.
Both elliptical trainers come with a backlit LCD but the Schwinn 438 elliptical has LED prompts. However, the Schwinn 431 being the newer model seems to sport a look that looks a bit more modern despite being the cheaper unit.
Overall, both ellipticals are more similar than different. Speaking solely from a features perspective, there’s nothing the Schwinn 438 has that the Schwinn 431 doesn’t that really justifies it being $200 more expensive. This means that if you do decide to get the more expensive Schwinn 438, you’re just paying for more quality (and fewer problems).
