Side-By-Side Review

Prior to 2007, the Smooth 5.25 was the lowest priced treadmill model from Smooth Fitness selling at $999. This all changed in the 4th quarter of 2007 when Smooth introduced the Smooth 4.25 treadmill which sells for $799. The Smooth 4.25 is thus the most affordable treadmill model ever from Smooth Fitness which is one of the web’s top 400 e-retailers. So the question becomes whether it’s better to buy the newly released Smooth 4.25 or pony up and pay a little more for the Smooth 5.25.

Things To Consider

The Smooth 5.25 treadmill has been out for a long time and in a sense, it’s a proven product. In fact, the Smooth 5.25 has already been out for 2 to 3 years and it is actually based on the older Smooth 5.15 model which has since been discontinued. But during the time when the Smooth 5.15 was out, it received quite a few best buy honors. This means that the Smooth 5.25 is not only based on the award winning Smooth 5.15, it has also been released long enough for any problems (if there were any that even existed) to be fixed. All in all, the Smooth 5.25 treadmill is a solid choice for the reasons above.

With the Smooth 4.25, you’re dealing with a new and unproven model. Even though Smooth Fitness is a respectable brand, it is still a new model that is unproven. Added to this is the fact that the Smooth 4.25 costs only $800. No matter what the salespeople tell you, you really can’t expect $800 to buy a treadmill that resembles anything close to what you would find at a gym. This means if you’re considering the Smooth 4.25 at all, note that if you intend to use it for anything intense, expect problems. If you’re just going to be walking and perhaps occasionally jogging, a Smooth 4.25 is just about as good as it gets in this price.

Differences Between the Smooth 4.25 Treadmill and the Smooth 5.25 Treadmill

Where on the Smooth 5.25 treadmill, you can get away with jogging, the Smooth 4.25 seems to be strictly a walking treadmill. Looking at the specs will tell us why.

The Smooth 4.25 treadmill features a 16” X 50” treadmill belt. If you’ve looked at treadmills from other brands, you will soon discover that this is an extremely small belt! At times, small belts may actually prove advantageous especially in situations such as this one when the primary purpose of the Smooth 4.25 should be for walking.

When you’re walking, you don’t require an abnormally long stride so a shorter distance is acceptable. In fact, having a belt length longer than 50” may actually prove to be disadvantageous if the motor is underpowered. You see, when a belt is too large for a motor to handle, all sorts of problems can arise. The 2.0 continuous horsepower (CHP) motor is more than sufficient to handle the 16”X50” treadbelt.

The Smooth 5.25 treadmill on the other hand features a significantly larger belt at 20” X 53” but also comes with a significantly more powerful motor at 2.5 CHP. It also goes as fast as 10 MPH which is 2 MPH higher than the 8 MPH of the Smooth 4.25. If you’re looking to do any type running, you would have to do it on the Smooth 5.25 but if you’re going to some serious running, you would need to step up to at least the Smooth 6.25 or better.

Conclusion

Walk and walking only on the Smooth 4.25. Light jogging and running are OK for the Smooth 5.25 but if you intend to put some serious miles on your treadmill, consider something better from Smooth Fitness such as the Smooth 6.25 or one of their models that start with a “9”.
